How We Produce Precision Investment Casting Prototypes

Eingusssystem-Design für präzise Gussprototypen bei Formkon – Optimierung des Materialflusses für hochwertige Ergebnisse.

Sprue System Design

The process begins with the detailed 3D design of the sprue system, which also includes adding machining allowances to ensure precision during subsequent CNC processing, if required.

3D Printing of PMMA Models

The required number of casting prototypes is first 3D-printed as PMMA models. These models, along with the sprue system, are manufactured using our Voxeljet VX-1000 printer.

Mold Creation

The 3D-printed PMMA models are embedded in plaster and burned out at approximately 700°C. This creates a cavity in the plaster mold that corresponds to the final metal casting part.

The Casting Process

After burning out the PMMA models, molten aluminum or magnesium is poured into the plaster mold. Once solidified, the mold is broken, and the prototype cleaned of excess plaster and sprue.

Post-Processing

After casting, the prototypes can be processed in our state-of-the-art CNC machining department, equipped with 20 precise and efficient CNC machines.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What are the benefits of investment casting compared to other casting methods?

Investment casting offers unique advantages for producing complex cast parts:

  • Complex Geometries and Fine Tolerances Investment casting enables the creation of intricate shapes, fine tolerances, and internal channels that are not feasible with other methods.
  • Thin-Walled Components Wall thicknesses as thin as 1 mm—and in some cases even thinner—are achievable.
  • Fast Turnaround The efficient process accelerates development from concept to finished prototype.
  • Cost-Effective for Prototypes and Small Batches Investment casting is ideal for producing prototypes and small batches ranging from 1 to 50 pieces.

Compared to other casting methods, investment casting combines precision, design flexibility, and cost efficiency for low-volume production, making it the optimal solution for testing, validation, and prototype product development.

Contact us to learn how investment casting can provide precise, cost-effective solutions for your complex prototypes and small serie production needs.

How long is the delivery time for prototypes?

Most investment casting prototypes can be produced within 1–3 weeks. For orders requiring CNC post-processing, the typical delivery time is 3–6 weeks. Thanks to our efficient investment casting workflow, we are among the fastest providers in the market. Despite our speed, we never compromise on quality, delivering high-precision investment cast prototypes and customised solutions that meet the most demanding industry standards.

Reach out or request a callback to discuss your project timeline and let us deliver high-precision investment cast prototypes on schedule without compromising on quality.

How can I submit a request?

Submitting a request is simple and efficient. You can contact us directly via our website, phone, or email. To help us provide the best possible service, we recommend including CAD data and specific requirements. Please also let us know your desired timeline for the prototypes. Our team will review your request and contact you if we have any questions. Otherwise, you’ll typically receive our proposal within a few days. You can also upload secure files through our Filemail form, and we handle all information with the utmost confidentiality.

Why Investment Casting Prototypes? The Benefits

A variety of production methods are available today for creating prototypes from materials such as aluminum or magnesium. While alternatives like 3D printing or CNC milling can sometimes be more economical and faster, casting prototypes using the investment casting process offers significant advantages—especially if series production will later be carried out using die casting.

Key Advantages of Investment Casting Prototypes

Realistic Testing Enables comprehensive testing under production-like conditions, allowing early issue identification and efficient design refinement.

Design Optimization Supports fine-tuning of designs for casting, including adjustments to wall thickness, curves, and radii.

Precise Alloy Selection Facilitates the achievement of realistic mechanical and thermal properties, along with thorough corrosion testing.
